Tony Fernandes takeover of QPR yesterday has sparked an array of controversy as to what his aims might be for the team.

Also the owner of the Team Lotus Formula One team and airline company AirAsia, he’s not a new one to the sports industry. He took control of the club after he bought out majority shareholder Bernie Ecclestone aswell as former Renault F1 team principal Flavio Briatore.

QPR haven’t had the best of seasons so far, losing 4-0 to Bolton the Saturday before the take over, making for a terrible way to start what is the clubs first time in the premier league since 1996.

QPR managers have identified Shaun Wright-Phillips, Scott Parker and Nedum Onuoha as targets for the rest of the transfer window. But Fernandes has refused to get carried away with his new venture, refusing to make promises to any supporters.

“I’m not someone that’s going to make any promises because I’d rather deliver reality than making big promises like we’ll be in Europe here, or we’ll survive here,” he’s been quoted saying on CNN.

He tells us he had a fantastic day out (in rare British sun, thankfully), and celebrated the match’s outcome so aptly that he missed work the next day. We salute you Andy!

FOOTBALL: ENGLAND V WALES

This year, the 98th Tour de France covers over 3.430 kilometres, in 21 stages, over 22 days. After the day of rest (and the one only), the 16th stage of the tour begins.

As the contestants take on the (mainly uphill) 162.5kilometres between southern town Saint Paul Trois Chateaux into eastern capital of Haute-Alpes, Gap, the tension to find the winner rises.

It is often, that after the rest day- something interesting, or unexpected happens, such as when in 2003, Lance Armstrong decided to take part in some cyclo-cross over an Alpine meadow. This out of the blue behaviour of course caught headlines.

On Sunday, Mark Cavendish won his Fourth Stage in the 2011 Tour de France. The 19th win in his career, Cavendish said; “What gets you through the mountains is the smell of success on a day like this. The guys know that it doesn’t matter how much I suffer in the mountains. If I get a smell of the finish line, I’ll try and win.” It has been remarked that today’s test will be ‘an appetiser’ for a hard last three days, which will see them go from Gap, through Pinerolo, to Galibier in the 18th stage, then from Modane to Alpe-d’Huez in the 19th and the 20th is a round tour around Grenoble, all these are high in the mountains. The 21st stage will see the riders coming back down to earth and cycle from Creteil to Paris. Indeed, gruelling distances for three days work.

Perhaps the ‘smell’ of the finish line prompt Cavendish to win this year’s Tour de France?

At 42 years of age and 53 previous major attempts, few will have predicted seeing Darren Clarke’s name being engraved into the Claret Jug. Clarke started the final round at Royal St. George’s, Kent with a one shot lead over playing partner Dustin Johnson and three shots ahead of Rickie Fowler. There was no shortage of support for Clarke, with over 30,000 fans braving the wild conditions to witness the outcome of the 140th Open Championship. Darren didn’t disappoint, shooting a final round of 70, even par, leaving him 5 under for the week and 3 shots ahead of Mickleson and Johnson in tied second. Clarke’s final round 70 epitomized his calm persona, which he had maintained throughout the course of the four days, leaving golf fans asking the question as to why it took 54 attempts for him to win a major.

Clarke’s victory at Royal St. George’s meant that he has become the third Northern Irishman to win a major in the last 13 months, following Graeme McDowell and Rory McIllroy’s 2010 and 2011 victories in the US Open, prompting McIllroy to suggest that Northern Ireland is the ‘golf capital of the world’. Andrew ‘Chubby’ Chandler, Clarke’s manager (as well as McIllroy, Westwood and Schwartzel) couldn’t have been any happier for Darren, after what has been a torrid few years for the Northern Irishman. After losing his wife to breast cancer in 2006 Clarke has struggled to re-produce some of his best golf, with a heroic performance in the 2006 Ryder Cup, scoring 3 points from 3 matches being an exception.

- Joe Williams
